Ship Classification

Ship Classification is a critical process undertaken by authorized classification societies. It ensures that marine vessels are meticulously designed, robustly constructed, and consistently maintained in accordance with rigorous international technical standards. This comprehensive verification process confirms the structural integrity and operational safety of a vessel, certifying its fitness for the intended maritime purpose.

Assignment of Class

A vessel is formally assigned a class designation upon the successful completion of extensive surveys. These surveys validate its full compliance with all pertinent rules and established standards. This classification stands as a formal testament to the vessel's inherent structural soundness and its capability for safe maritime operations.

Class assignment can typically occur under the following key circumstances:

  • New Construction: Upon the final completion of a newly built vessel's construction, following a series of satisfactory and comprehensive surveys.
  • Existing Vessel (Previously Classified): After a satisfactory specific class survey of an existing ship that was previously classified with another recognized classification society.
  • Existing Unclassed Vessel: Subsequent to a satisfactory specific class survey of an existing ship that did not previously hold a classification.

Transfer of Class

Transferring a vessel's classification from one society to another is a structured process, conducted meticulously in accordance with established international procedures to ensure seamless continuity and unwavering compliance with all applicable standards.

In addition to fulfilling the standard procedural requirements, vessel owners should be prepared to furnish the following comprehensive documentation, as applicable to their specific vessel:

  • Latest and complete historical classification records.
  • Up-to-date and historical statutory records and certificates.
  • Recent and historical sea trial performance reports.
  • Detailed hull thickness measurement records and reports.
  • Rudder bearing and tail shaft clearance records (inclusive of poker gauge readings).
  • Deck crane slewing bearing clearance and maintenance records.
  • Megger test results for all critical electrical equipment and operational test logs for generators.
  • Comprehensive lubricating oil analysis reports for main and auxiliary machinery.
  • Detailed water analysis reports for boilers and main engine cooling systems.

The diligent provision of these essential documents facilitates a smooth, efficient, and timely transfer process. This ensures that the vessel maintains its vital classification status without any interruption, safeguarding its operational capabilities and regulatory compliance.

Ship Certification

Statutory Certification

We are authorized to issue statutory certificates in accordance with the terms of recognition granted by various flag administrations. These certifications affirm a vessel's compliance with international maritime conventions and codes.

Issuance Process:

  • Survey Completion: Certificates are issued or endorsed following the successful completion of relevant surveys by our qualified surveyors.
  • Short-Term Certificates: In cases where minor deficiencies are identified that do not impede the vessel's safe operation or environmental protection, a short-term certificate may be issued. This certificate will clearly list the corrective actions required, along with specified timelines for their rectification.

Enforcement and Compliance:

Should the necessary corrective actions not be undertaken within the stipulated period, the relevant flag administration reserves the full right to withdraw or invalidate the issued certificate. Maintaining compliance is paramount for continuous operation.

For a comprehensive list of flag administrations that have delegated statutory certification authority to us, and for any specific queries regarding your vessel's certification needs, please contact our office directly.

Type Approval

We recognize and accept the installation of marine products and the appointment of service providers that have been approved by members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). This ensures a baseline standard of quality and reliability.

Requirements:

  • Valid Certification: Only products and services with current and valid type approval certificates, issued by an IACS member society, are accepted for installation or engagement on classed vessels.
  • Ballast Water Treatment Systems: For these critical environmental systems, we have additional specific requirements that go beyond standard type approval. Prior to initiating any new projects involving the installation or retrofitting of ballast water treatment systems, it is imperative to consult with our head office to ensure full compliance with all applicable regulations and our society's guidelines.
